Budget Wooden HB pencil

This budget HB pencil is a classic hexagonal wood body with a reliable HB lead inside.  The pencil is packed in a tub of 50 and is un-sharpened.

Wood pencils are of course a more traditional type of pencil that superseded the use of charcoal blocks for writing.  They are another example of British invention, first being produced in 1564 after the discovery of a graphite deposit in Barrowdale.  However, it took German engineering to mass produce, the first such graphite pencils being mass produced in Nuremberg in 1662.  Of course the advantage of graphite over ink and metal scribes was the ease with which the graphite could be erased using a rubber eraser.

Since the early versions, there have been numerous innovations including use of different wood for the body (splinter proof being preferred), painted bodies, various body shapes (hexagonal, triangular and round) and different types of lead.  The HB pencil is perhaps the most widely used and is an industry standard but grades go from ‘B’ (soft) through to ‘H’ (hard, with a number denoting the degree of softness or hardness.

It was in 1838 that the eraser was first fixed to the end of a wood pencil by Hymen Lipman but pencils continue to be produced, as the AWP30401 is, without an eraser.
